How long is your to-do list? If you are like me, you have to-do lists everywhere. I have a master list in my phone of EVERYTHING that needs to get done, sticky notes on my desk for work, and a notebook in the kitchen. With 3 boys in 3 schools, my list was already long, but between an upcoming vacation and planning my husband’s milestone birthday, my to-do list is currently more than a full notebook page.
Long, never-ending to-do lists can cause stress, anxiety, and feelings of overwhelm. I had all of these symptoms most days of the week, and caused myself unnecessary worrying and upset. Through my own wellness journey, I have learned some tips and tricks to keep my to-do list manageable, and reduce stress. I no longer feel overwhelmed every day (there are still those crazy weeks that come up once in a while, but I manage them much better now). Here are some things I do now:
- Prioritize yourself. Pick one thing for you and do it first! Whether it’s getting your workout in, planning/ prepping a healthy meal, journaling, reading, or even making time for a warm bath. Doing something for yourself will set a positive tone for tackling the rest of the list.
- After you take care of yourself, start with one task with a deadline and do it. This could be paying a bill, working on a school project with the kids, or returning a library book. If a due date is coming up, get it done.
- The next task should be something for the home. If you need to make an appointment for a plumber or repair-person, make it the third task. Work on a home project or do a chore (like laundry, ironing, washing dishes…).
- Take a breath. You got this.
- Do something for someone else. Whether you need to run an errand for a parent (or child), spend time with another person, or help with homework, pick a person and get something accomplished.
- The last task on your to-do list should be for a group. Whether you are on the PTA, the boy/ girl scouts, a sports team, or involved with your religious organization, dedicate some time to completing any work you have for that group.
- Celebrate. Look at all the things you crossed off your list. Take a short break, and a few minutes to clear your mind and do nothing.
- Rinse and repeat. If you completed all of these tasks and you still have time and energy, start at the top and work your way down again.
