Recently I sat down and had a chat with Monika Joshi, founder of Art of Pure, a company that is on a mission to provide natural and sustainable beauty and personal care products. Watch the interview by clicking on the link below.
Although I’ve always had a passion for eating healthy and exercising, I’m relatively new in the quest for clean and natural skincare, make-up, and personal care products. I first heard about toxins in common products about 6 or 7 years ago but I really didn’t really think anything of it at that time and brushed it off.
Then 3 years ago during COVID quarantine, I was researching how to improve my PMS symptoms (because they were awful), and that is when I learned about toxins called endocrine disruptors. These are chemicals found in common everyday products. Endocrine disruptor means that these chemicals can affect the way the hormones function in our bodies. I didn’t know that the products I was using could affect my endocrine and reproductive hormones. Monika’s journey started when she set out to find something to treat her daughter’s eczema (instead of the steroids the doctor was recommending).
It was 2 years ago, when I really took a close look at the products I was using. Since then, I have switched out some of my make-up, and moisturizers to cleaner and more natural products. I am still learning all of this information on a regular basis, and continue to swap products out as I learn about safe alternatives.
I asked Monika which toxins we should be avoiding in our skincare, make-up, and personal care products. Here are the most common endocrine disruptors to look out for:
- Phthalates, sulfates, fragrances
- Anolamines, parabens
- Petrolatum, aluminum
What are some of the ingredients that we should be using for our skin care? Here are Monika’s recommendations:
- Anti-oxidants
- Vitamin C
- Peptides and Ceramides
- Moisturizers (water and oil-based)
- SPF daily
Hopefully, you found this information helpful. Monika and I hope that we inspired you to check the products you are currently using to see if they contain any toxins. Remember, reach out to either one of us if you want more information.
