It starts with Halloween and doesn’t end until the New Year’s Eve party. Parties, family gatherings, sweet treats, stress, and lack of sleep are all part of the season. The holidays can wreak havoc on our health if we’re not careful. Fortunately, there are things we can do to stay healthy while enjoying this special time.
Here are the things I do to keep my body healthy during the holiday season:
- Make sure to eat nutritious foods and get enough rest on a daily basis. Practicing these healthy habits throughout the year allows me to compensate for all the holiday parties (make sure to eat healthy in between the parties).
- Eat a healthy breakfast. If you are going to a lunch or dinner party, focus on healthy eating early in the day. Fill up on lean protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Have eggs with vegetables and avocado or a parfait with Greek yogurt, mixed berries, and nuts.
- Stay hydrated during the day. This is important everyday and especially if you plan on having a drink or two at a party.
- Scan the buffet. If you are at an event with a buffet meal, take a moment to look at the options before getting a plate. Checking out the food choices will ensure you leave room in your plate for your favorite dish that is at the end of the line. Before getting seconds, ask yourself if you are still hungry or if you are eating just to eat.
- Indulge to taste the foods, but do not overeat. It’s ok to taste all the amazing foods at a party. The trick is to keep your portions small. Eat slowly and savor every bite.
- Eat your fiber. Make sure you are eating plenty of fiber (along with plenty of water) before, during, and after your parties to help balance out all the unhealthy foods.
- Get your exercise in before the party. Make it a priority to get your workouts done in the morning if you are going to a party later in the day.
- Try not to stress. Anxiety and tension can increase our cortisol levels, which can lead to sugar cravings and weight gain. Practice yoga or meditation so you can enjoy time with family and friends.
